Foreign Film Rental

La Petite Lili (DVD)

La Petite Lili (DVD)
Handsome, young, na've, foreign film rental and insufferably pretentious, amateur filmmaker Julien (Robinson StUvenin) foreign film rental and his famous actress mother, Mado (Nicole Garcia), are locked into a power-play at their country house. Jeanne (Julie Depardieu), the daughter of the caretaker, is in love with Julien. But Julien's girlfriend, Lili (Ludivine Sagnier), is irresistibly drawn to the successful feature-film director Brice (Bernard Giraudeau), Mado's longtime lover foreign film rental and the representation of everything Julien hates about filmmaking. This chaos gets drawn out in achingly beautiful, color-drenched shots of blue skies, ocean, trees, foreign film rental and the earthy, ethereal Sagnier in full flower. It's a decidedly post-modern interpretation of Chekhov's THE SEAGULL, by esteemed film director Claude Miller (ALIAS BETTY), wherein the plot eventually doubles back on itself to become a self-reflexive study of filmmaking. Though Miller has a lot to say about the compromises of art, he makes sure his characters are never mere mouthpieces: they all interact like real people, with a refreshing amount of tender affection for one another. The film has all the qualities of the best French imports: warmth, intelligence, humor, foreign film rental and liberal dashes of sex foreign film rental and critical theory. It's the sort of foreign film that originally made foreign films popular in America. Sagnier is clearly her generation's Brigitte Bardot, foreign film rental and Julie Depardieu (Gerard's daughter) proves herself a major talent in a memorable side role. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Goodbye Dragon Inn (DVD)

Goodbye Dragon Inn (DVD)
The subject of cinema, of the mix of loneliness foreign film rental and connection that is part of being in a movie audience, is the concern of this sad, beautiful, minimalist composition by Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-Liang (WHAT TIME IS IT THERE?). The action takes place Inside a Taipei movie theater operated by a lonely clubfooted woman (Shiyang Chi-Chen) whose slow steps echo through the empty corridors foreign film rental and aisles, as if measuring out the feet of celluloid that make up the film itself. When a character actually speaks, the film is half over, foreign film rental and his exclamation that the theater is haunted echoes uneasily through the rest of the film, causing one to wonder just who is a ghost foreign film rental and who isn't. A lonely visitor to the theater (Kiyonobu Mitamura) acts pretty real. But then there are characters who seem to come out of nowhere to sit next to him foreign film rental and bother him with their loud eating. The film on the theater screen is the 1966 King Hu martial arts classic, DRAGON INN, foreign film rental and one of that film's original actors is even in the theater, with his grandson. While not a lot seems to happen, Tsai's film is never dull thanks to the playful sense of sound foreign film rental and stunning cinematography. In chronicling the impermanence of life, foreign film rental and of film itself, this film becomes post-modern as well as beautiful, and---rare for an art film of this sort--accessible foreign film rental and engaging even to the casual movie lover.
